Zainab Al-Baaj came to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1994, an Iraqi refugee escaping bombing in war-torn Basra. In the fourth grade, her house was hit by a bomb. She remembers that the blast lifted her and her family so high in the air, they almost touched the ceiling. Shattered glass cut members of her family as they crawled to safety. They lived with an aunt until their house was repaired. In another bombing her brother Ali was hit and suffered major injuries. His life was spared but still battles with the effects of his injuries today.
