Ames, IA – Meet the Editors will feature Drs. Eulanda Sanders, Samii Kennedy Benson and Denise Caleb Thursday, December 3, 4 p.m. (CST) in a virtual 1-hour session. Join these three remarkable women as they discuss an upcoming historic issue of The International Textile and Apparel Association’s (ITTA) Clothing and Textiles Research Journal (CTRJ), published by Sage Publications, where they will serve as guest editors, taking the place of the regular CTRJ editor and associate editors.
The tragic murder of George Floyd, Summer 2020, caused global recognition of the importance of the Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM). Founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, BLM’s purpose is “By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.”
Black individuals have provided unrecognized and undocumented imagination and innovation within the apparel, fashion and textile industries which are vast, profound and multifaceted. Sanders, Benson and Caleb’s December 3 discussion points to those contributions featured in their own doctoral work through an array of scholarly methods. Dr. Eulanda Sanders, Chair, Department of Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management, Iowa State University, doctoral thesis was “African American Appearance: Cultural Analysis of Slave Women’s Narratives.” Dr. Samii Kennedy Benson, Assistant Professor, Apparel Merchandising and Textiles, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, did her doctoral work under Dr. Sanders, and her dissertation was “Black Fashion Designers Matter: A Qualitative Study Exploring the Experiences of Black Female Fashion Design Entrepreneurs.” Dr. Denise Caleb, Executive Vice President, Client Strategy, Partnership and Sales, Talent Plus, Inc. doctoral thesis was, “The Succession Planning Experiences that African American Women Encountered When Achieving Executive Level Leadership.”
This virtual Meet the Editors event is to inform, encourage and challenge contributors to unearth new information, relay untold stories and provide new perspectives to demonstrate Black Lives Matter in the disciplines of apparel, fashion and textiles via their Call for Presentations due March 31, 2021.
